Gilbert Abott Beckett
The Comic Blackstone
London, Bradbury and Evans, 1856. Fine Binding. Gilbert Abbott Beckett satirises contemporary Victorian laws in this playful commentary A neat copy of this whimsical story from English lawyer and humourist Gilbert Abbott Beckett, with a frontispiece by Victorian illustrator George Cruickshank. As well as producing around fifty plays, contributing to several newspapers, and editing the comic paper Figaro in London, Beckett was also one of the original staff at Punch magazine. In this work, Beckett provides a satirical commentary on contemporary British laws, with a particular focus on the division of property, and the laws surrounding public and private wrongdoings. Bookplate of Egerton Parker to recto of front free endpaper. In a quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little wear and discolouration of the calf towards the extremities. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good . Ill.: George Cruickshank.
