Waren het voor de omwenteling in 1991 vooral de nieuwsgierigheid naar een volkomen onbekend land en de bijna onmogelijkheid als “kapitalist” dit marxistisch-leninistische bastion binnen te dringen, nadien zijn het vooral de intermenselijke relaties die de schrijver telkenmale terug deden en doen keren naar het land waaraan hij zijn hart heeft verloren en waarmee hij zich door kluisters weet verbonden. Zonder enige gêne doet de scribent verslag van zijn ervaringen, ontmoetingen en emoties in heden en verleden in het land waar hij zich meer thuis voelt dan in zijn eigen koude kikkerlandje aan de Noordzee. Hij uit de vrees, dat ook de Albanezen in de toekomst niet zullen ontkomen aan de regelgeving uit Brussel en aan de invloed van het kapitalistische Westen. De grote vraag is of – na een Turkse, Italiaanse, Duitse bezetting en een marxistisch-leninistisch bewind – de nationale trots zodanig gemasseerd kan worden dat het volk bereid is een nieuw gezag te accepteren zonder voor hun zwaar bevochten vrijheden opnieuw de barricaden op te gaan. Maar bepaalde machten en krachten zullen ook het rijk der Skipetaren op subtiele wijze hun wil weten op te leggen en het daarmee een ander gezicht geven. An apparent First Edition, from 1833 (Howes), with multiple editions published again 1838, 1850, 1852, 1897, and 1928, at least. Bound in mottled, wrinkled thin leather over boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, rubbed and abraded paper label to spine, light chipping to spine head. Quite a didactic novel, in 156 pp., published anonymously, meant to point out shortcomings in public education in the rural hinterlands of early America. The author, Warren Burton, was a Harvard-educated Unitarian minister, mostly "at-large" but well thought of. The biographer of a Christian church-respite, Brook Farm, Lindsay Swift, notes that he spent about three years there, then left without notice in 1844 and disappeared.
