Certains qui ont fui l'Europe pour chercher refuge en Amérique établissent des réseaux de solidarité transcontinentale et contribuent à la création d'une économie ouvrant les voies à la modernité. Sur le plan religieux, à la fois juifs et chrétiens, dedans-dehors, les marranes développent des formes de pensée sceptique qui conduisent à la vision d'un monde moins dogmatique, plus complexe, plus relatif, plus tolérant : penser à Montaigne et à Spinoza. Du pauvre hère que fut juan Vicente au richissime trafiquant d'esclaves Manuel Bautista Perez, de l'érudit Francisco Maldonado de Silva à la " rustique " Theresa Paes de Jesus, l'auteur explore la condition marrane comme lieu des drames, des angoisses et des mutations de l'Occident moderne. Au scrupule de l'historien qui restitue le contenu des procès consignés dans les vieilles archives inquisitoriales, Wachtel allie le souci de l'anthropologue : au printemps 2000, il fait le lien entre le passé et le présent, rencontrant au Brésil des marranes contemporains. Faisant bon usage de l'anachronisme, et tout en soulignant les différences, Nathan Wachtel rapproche la péninsule Ibérique des XVe et XVIe siècles de l'Allemagne nazie du XXe. Dans les deux cas, c'est une " logique du sang " qui a mis un terme à la réussite des processus d'assimilation, rejetant les juifs hors de la communauté des vivants.
