HENNESSY, ELIZABETH
A Domestic History of the Bank of England 1930-1960
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. 1992, First Edition. (ISBN: 0521391407). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in red cloth boards with near Fine dustjacket. xv + 449 pages. 8 colour and 51 black and white illustrations. This book, which is based on the Bank of England's own mainly unpublished archives, describes the internal workings of the Bank from 1930 to 1960 under three Governors, Lord Norman, Lord Catto and Lord Cobbold. It contains much hitherto private information on the Bank's accounting methods and profitability, and on the note issue including bank note design. These decades were a period of enormous change, when its working methods (many dating back to its foundation in 1694) were radically updated and in some cases mechanised in a progression from handwritten ledgers to computers. New functions such as exchange control were put in place, help was given to many newly developed countries in setting up their own central banks, and many new buildings were erected. A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.93 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 21. Fine/Near Fine.
