The Legend of Colton H. Bryant
Penguin Press, 2008. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 202. Colton knew there were a hundred ways to die in Wyoming. That's why he figured there was only one way to live-with all his heart. When Alexandra Fuller set out to write about the oil rigs on Wyoming's high plains, she was expecting the fierce weather and the roughnecks, the big skies and the industry men, but she wasn't expecting to encounter a real-life cowboy. Then Colton H. Bryant happened into her story, a soulful boy with a mustang-taming heart and blue eyes that'll look right through you. The story of his life took over Fuller's writing and a kind of magic ensued, the result of which became this book.-From publisher description. ISBN: 9781594201837. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Onze eindeloze dagen
A.W. Bruna Uitgevers, 2016. Paperback. Pp: 320. - The Sunday Times'Een triomf. Fuller heeft een meesterlijk, spannend sprookje voor volwassenen geschreven.' - The Times'Fuller beschrijft de natuur bedwelmend mooi, in al haar schoonheid en wreedheid.' - Independent. Steve Fuller 185603
The Philosophy of Science and Technology Studies
Routledge, 2006. Paperback. Pp: 191. As the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) has become more established, it has increasingly hidden its philosophical roots. While the trend is typical of disciplines striving for maturity, Steve Fuller, a leading figure in the field, argues that STS has much to lose if it abandons philosophy. In his characteristically provocative style, he offers the first sustained treatment of the philosophical foundations of STS and suggests fruitful avenues for further research. With stimulating discussions of the Science Wars, the Intelligent Design Theory controversy, and theorists such as Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour, Philosophy of Science and Technology Studies is required reading for students and scholars in STS and the philosophy of science. Steve Fuller 185603
A Player's Guide to the Post-Truth Condition
Anthem Press, 2020. Paperback. Pp: 130. A Player's Guide to the Post-Truth Condition: The Name of the Game presents sixteen short, readable chapters designed to leverage our post-truth condition's deep historical and philosophical roots into opportunities for unprecedented innovation and change. Fuller offers a bracing, proactive and hopeful vision against the tendency to demonize post-truth as the realm of 'fake news' and 'bullshit'. Where others see threats to the established order, Fuller sees opportunities to overturn it. This theme is pursued across many domains, including politics, religion, the economy, the law, public relations, journalism, the performing arts and academia, not least academic science. The red thread running through Fuller's treatment is that these domains are games that cannot be easily won unless one can determine the terms of engagement, which is to say, the 'name of the game'. This involves the exercise of 'modal power', which is the capacity to manipulate what people think is possible. Once the 'necessarily' true appears to be only 'contingently' so, then the future suddenly becomes a more open space for action. This was what frightened Plato about the alternative realities persuasively portrayed by playwrights in ancient Athens. Nevertheless, Fuller believes that it should be embraced by denizens of today's post-truth condition. This book is designed to do what its title says, namely, to provide a guide to the post-truth condition for those who wish to feel at home and thrive in it - rather than simply avoid or attack it. It consists of a series of short chapters that are best read in the order presented but may also be read in a different order or simply in parts - as most books are normally read. The book ranges widely across philosophy, theology, science, politics, economics, psychology and the arts - but hopefully in a way that allows readers to find their bearings, given the opportunities presented by the Internet to follow up whatever might interest them in the text. Underlying this breadth of scope is a fundamental scepticism with 'business as usual' in the production and evaluation of knowledge claims. To be sure, the reader will see that post-truth extends many of the themes already found in what passes for 'postmodernism'. However, at a deeper level, and in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the post-truth condition invites us to discover in a new key what it has always meant to be 'modern'. ISBN: 9781785276040. Scribbling the Cat
Pan Macmillan, 2006. Pocket. Pp: 256. When Alexandra Bo Fuller was in Zambia a few years ago visiting her parents, she asked her father about a nearby banana farmer who was known as being a tough bugger. Her father's response was a warning to steer clear of him: Curiosity scibbled the cat, he told her. Nonetheless, Fuller began her strange friendhip with the man she calls K, a white African and veteran of the Rhodesian War. A man of contradictions, K is battle-scarred and work-weathered, a born-again Christian and given to weeping for the failure of his romantic life and the burden of his memories. Driven by K's these memories of the war, they decide to enter the heart of darkness in the most literal way, by travelling from Zambia through Zimbabwe and Mozambique to visit the scenes of the war and to meet other veterans. The result is a remarkably unbiased and unsentimental glimpse of life in Africa. ISBN: 9780330435840. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Seeing Berger
Writers and Readers, 1981. Paperback. Pp: 40. "In this incisive counter-polemic Peter Fuller underlines what is most valuable in Berger's criticism, while attacking the art ideologists who would negate the existence of any aesthetic experience. He succinctly agues the case for a materialistic understanding of art and its value which moves beyond ideology and permits one to confront the 'masterpiece', the work of art which breaks free from the norms of tradition and transcends its time."-back cover. 9780226268941 Steve Fuller 185603, Thomas Kuhn. A philosophical history for our times
Steve Fuller 185603
Thomas Kuhn. A philosophical history for our times
University of Chicago Press, 2000. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 472. Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is one of the best known and most influential books of the twentieth century. Whether they adore or revile him, critics and fans alike have tended to agree on one thing: Kuhn's ideas were revolutionary. But were they? Steve Fuller argues that Kuhn actually held a profoundly conservative view of science and how one ought to study its history. Early on, Kuhn came under the influence of Harvard President James Bryant Conant (to whom Structure is dedicated), who had developed an educational program intended to help deflect Cold War unease over science's uncertain future by focusing on its illustrious past. Fuller argues that this rhetoric made its way into Structure, which Fuller sees as preserving and reinforcing the old view that science really is just a steady accumulation of truths about the world (once "paradigm shifts" are resolved). Fuller suggests that Kuhn, deliberately or not, shared the tendency in Western culture to conceal possible negative effects of new knowledge from the general public. Because it insists on a difference between a history of science for scientists and one suited to historians, Fuller charges that Structure created the awkward divide that has led directly to the "Science Wars" and has stifled much innovative research. In conclusion, Fuller offers a way forward that rejects Kuhn's fixation on paradigms in favor of a conception of science as a social movement designed to empower society's traditionally disenfranchised elements. Certain to be controversial, Thomas Kuhn must be read by anyone who has adopted, challenged, or otherwise engaged with The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. "Structure will never look quite the same again after Fuller. In that sense, he has achieved one of the main aims of his ambitious and impressively executed project.""Jon Turney, Times Higher Education Supplement "Philosophies like Kuhn's narrow the possible futures of inquiry by politically methodizing and taming them. More republican philosophies will leave the future open. Mr. Fuller has amply succeeded in his program of distinguishing the one from the other.""William R. Everdell, Washington Times.
