The History of the Prayer Book of the Church of England.
SPCK,, 1857. 8vo., with engraved title-vignette, neat signature on front paste-down; original cloth, sides with triple frame border enclosing a large geometric floral device all in blind, gilt back, corners lightly bruised else a very good, crisp, clean copy. Berens' account was first published (by Rivington) in 1839 and proved a very useful summary of earlier histories by Burnet, Collier, Fuller, Heylin and Strype among others. It was several times re-issued (commonly undated) by SPCK into the 1860s. Scarce in this edition and condition.

Leather is well rubbed and marked and front hinge/joint is broken and front cover is almost detached. The frontis plate, title-plate, and preface/contents page are repaired at edges. Pages and plates are somewhat darkened, plates also have some foxing and there are occasional short tears, nicks etc. in the margins and some smudges . Pages lxxxi / lxxxii are missing, the plate opposite to page 412 has a closed tear taped on the rear, the index at the rear has the lower corner (including text) missing. Size: Large folio. Old ownership markings on the endpapers, one of which is dated 1840. Pages browned and foxed with age, but text otherwise quite legible and binding secure for normal handling. Two volumes in one, complete with five plates and two title vignettes. Measures approx. 10.25" x 8.
