A collection of fourteen volumes of The Cornhill Magazine, monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal. Some 1860s publications, edited by William Makepeace Thackeray. Under his editorial guidance the paper's large circulation peaked around 110,00. In 1871, the editing was taken over by Leslie Stephens.The first issue appeared in 1860, with a selection of articles on diverse subjects and serialisations of new novels. This selection comprises among other contributions, numbers of Thackeray's Roundabout Papers and the first serialisation of Anthony Trollope's 'The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson,' including all twenty four chapters between vol. IV and V. With the first appearance of the popular historical novel of Romola by George Eliot, from chapter one in vol. VI through to the epilogue in vol. VIII. 'Culture and Anarchy' by Matthew Arnold in the publications between 1867-8. The story of 'Wives and Daughters' by Elizabeth Gaskell, from chapters XV in vol. XI to ch. LX in vol. XIII. The story of 'Armadale' by Wilkie Collins, from chapter II in vol. XI to its epilogue in vol. XIII.'The Claverings' by Anthony Trollope between vol. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things&apos. In a half calf binding over marbled boards and new endpapers. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the spine, boards, and extremities, minor scuffing to the leather. With some loss to the front board paper of vol. V and marking to the spine of vol. VI. Previous ownership inscription to the half title or title page, undated. With some offsetting to the title page of vol. VI. Internally, firmly bound. With a light foxing only to the occasional leaf, particularly to the leaves of plates, as common. The first few leaves of volume V are slightly cockled due to possible damp. The last few leaves of vol. VIII with some minor creasing. Illustrated with full page plates, some folding, and other illustrations in text. Collated, complete.
