Brands' succes direct na de oorlog droeg er ongetwijfeld toe bij dat hij vanaf 1947 de somberheid van de bezettingsjaren achter zich kon laten, en nadien losbarstte in een vitale expressionistische uitdrukkingswijze in warme kleuren.
