Uitgeverij Prominent. Paperback. Pp: 452. Deze historische roman (uit 1888) speelt in het Rome van begin derde eeuw, het toenmalig centrum van de wereld. Het Romeinse Rijk verkeerde op het toppunt van zijn militaire macht. Die was geconcentreerd in de vrijwel onbeperkte macht van de keizer. Zolang het leger hem steunde kon hij zijn gang gaan. Verloor hij die steun dan werd hij vermoord om plaats te maken voor een andere door het leger gekozen keizer. Zo werd in 218 een 14-jarige jongen, afkomstig uit Emessa in Syrië, door het leger tot keizer verkozen. Hij kwam uit een familie van hogepriesters van El Gabal, de Syrische zonnegod. Vandaar dat hij voortleeft onder de naam Elagabalus. Zijn steenrijke grootmoeder Moesa kocht het leger om en zo verschafte de familie zich een centrale plaats in het machtscentrum Rome. De zonnecultus van El Gabal met Elagabalus als hogepriester wordt dan in Rome staatsgodsdienst en staat boven het veelgodendom van de Romeinen. Kern ervan is het streven naar het herstel van de eenheid van de schepping in de androgyn, de man-vrouw. Sinds de splitsing van de geslachten heeft de mens het geluk niet kunnen vinden. In de roman is Attilius, hoofd van de Pretoriaanse garde, de fanatiekste aanhanger van genoemde cultus, die door keizer Elagabalus in het Romeinse Rijk verspreid zal worden. De jonge homoseksuele keizer maakt echter door zijn immorele en wispelturige gedrag een karikatuur van het hoge ideaal van Attilius en dat leidt tot een apocalyptische, bloedige ondergang van het vierjarige bewind van een van de liederlijkste Romeinse keizers ooit. Louis Couperus nam 'De agonie' als voorbeeld voor zijn roman 'De berg van Licht`. Over de vertaler: Frans van der Linden (1940) studeerde Nederlands aan de RU Leiden. Hij is verbonden aan het Haags Historisch Museum en medewerker van het Louis Couperus Museum.
