Three volumes in one, bound in a full calf binding, with decorative blind stamping to the boards and square, and intricate gilt detailing to the spine. All edges gilt. Binder's stamp of Smyth & Co. Gerry St, Liverpool, to the verso of the front free end paper. Ink inscription to the front blank, dated 1856, awarding this volume to Emily Ridgway as a First French Prize. Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) was a French author, poet, and statesman who was greatly influential in the foundation of the French Second Republic. This volume contains three of his poetry collections, all in the original French: 'Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses', 'Recueillements Poétiques', and 'Poésies Diverses&apos. The first collection, arranged in four parts, was originally published in 1830; the second poetry collection was originally published in 1839. This volume includes some of his best known poems, including 'The West' and 'The Butterfly&apos. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A little fading to the spine and extremities of the boards. Front hinge is slightly strained but firmly held.
