9780571163090 Lawrence Durrell 21203, The Avignon Quintet. Monsieur
Lawrence Durrell 21203
The Avignon Quintet. Monsieur
1992. Pp: 1367. This is the one-volume edition of five novels in a kaleidoscopic sequence first published between 1974 and 1985. The Avignon Quintet is an achievement comparable to Durrell's masterpiece The Alexandria Quartet, with which it has subtle affiliations. Avignon and the ancient kingdom of Provence take the place of Alexandria and the eastern Mediterranean, although significant episodes in the five books are set in the Egyptian desert, Venice, Paris, Vienna and Geneva. In one of the books, Constance, there is a memorable picture of life in southern France under the Nazi occupation. Durrell's prime themes of 'fiction' and 'reality' are shuffled and intercut with those of human identity and sexuality, Freud, the cult of the Gnostics, the heresy of the Templars and their missing treasure, and other bizarre and extraordinary matters - all rendered with great ingenuity and ribald humour by a supreme descriptive writer and novelist. ISBN: 9780571163090. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Lawrence Durrell 21203
Sebastian, Or Ruling Passions
The Viking Press, 1983. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 202. A madman, disguised as a nun, makes his way to an apartment in Geneva, intent on murder. An Egyptian banker hears his death sentence decreed by fellow members of a gnostic brotherhood. A novelist confronts, in the flesh, a character he has created. More than ever the peculiar magic of Lawrence Durrell is at work in Sebastian, fourth in his "quincunx," The Avignon Quintet. This novel is set mainly in Geneva and its environs, where Constance, a psychoanalyst, practices her profession while trying to come to terms with the end of a passionate love affair. The Egyptian Affad, or Sebastian, realizing that his attachment to Constance is a violation of the gnostic code, returns to Alexandria. There he learns that a letter prescribing his death has been mailed to Geneva and innocently intercepted by Constance. Durrell's story follows the trail of the letter as it falls into the hands of the madman Mnemedis. ISBN: 9780670627417. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Sir George Pollock was an accomplished photographer in his own right, a president of the Royal Photographic Society whose abstract work in the 1960's drew huge attention in the art world. He also acted as a consultant to the BBC in advising them in the iconic opening credits for the original 'Doctor Who&apos. The publication of this work in 1961 marked, in the words of curators Martina Droth and Paul Messier, 'the point at which Brandt"s stature as an art world figure came onto assured footing', and it was after this seminal work that people came to recognize Brandt as an artist rather than a journalist. This was Brandt's firs publication of nudes, a subject 'which has obsessed him since 1945', according to the dust wrapper. Chronologically arranged, the photographs in this work record the transition from 'an early romantic style to more classical themes&apos.
