The Poetical Works of James Beattie, LL. D. , and William Collins
London, David Bogue, 1846. Leather. An engraved collection of the poetry of James Beattie and William Collins, a lovely collection from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. A nice collection of the poetical works of James Beattie and William Collins.Beattie and Collins were both influential poets of eighteenth century, their poetry paving the way for the Romantics that were to follow.Illustrated with many in-text engravings throughout, from the drawings of John Absolon. With memoirs of the lives and writings of the authors by Thomas Miller.Part of the series 'Tilt's Illustrated Classics&apos.Four pages of adverts to the rear. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, from her library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. After being widowed at 25, Audrey married the fabulously wealthy American department store heir, Marshall Field III, later divorcing him and marrying the Honorable Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In a full morocco binding. Externally, leather is rubbed. A few light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'C. A. Leigh. from his sincere friend, W. Michell&apos. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spotting. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .

London, John Sharpe, 1805. Leather. A very smart collection of the poems of both William Collins and Thomas Gray in a contemporary binding, two influential English poets, two volumes here bound as one volume. Illustrated with two plates. Two volumes bound as one. In a signed binding by Faulkner. This work contains a collection of the poems of William Collins and Thomas Gray. Collins and Gray were both influential poets of the mid eighteenth century. Collins wrote lyrical odes that turned the public away from Augustan poetry and towards the Romantic era that literature was soon to see. Gray only published thirteen poems in his life due to his being very self-critical, even though all of his published poems received great acclaim. Illustrated with two plates. Binder's label to the front pastedown. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Sir George Denys&apos. Denys was a political, an MP for Kingston upon Hull from 1812 to 1818.
