¶ major reference work, discussing and abundantly depicting the first examples of furniture in Egypt and Mesopotamia about 3100 BC, and then tracing its development through Egypt (part I), the Near East (part II) and the Aegean (part III) down to the Classical era, about 475 B.C. This is the first comprehensive and well-documented study of ancient furniture, of interest to specialist and layman alike. Also its influence on English, French and American 18th and 19th century furniture is dealt with. The author himself was a furniture manufacturer of renown and turned archeologist for this study.
