"In the last decades of the 19th century, Alger's moral tone coarsened with the change in boys' tastes. The public wanted sensational thrills. The Protestant work ethic was less prevalent in the United States, and violence, murder, and other sensational themes entered Alger's works. Public librarians questioned whether his books should be made available to the young. [1][2] They were briefly successful, but interest in Alger's novels was renewed in the first decades of the 20th century, and they sold in the thousands. By the time he died in 1899, Alger had published around a hundred volumes. He is buried in Natick, Massachusetts." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

ALGER, Horatio, Jr., Dean Dunham or the Waterford Mystery
ALGER, Horatio, Jr.
Dean Dunham or the Waterford Mystery
Leyden, MA, Aeonian Press, 1975. Hardcover. Introduction by Ralph D. Gardner. 8vo. Lavender cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration. iii, 275pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Spine ever-so-faintly sunned, else internally near fine. Tight, quite nice first of this reprint edition of this 1891adventure of a plucky 16-year-old trying to unravel the mystery of his uncle's robbery. Gardner (1924-2005), New York advertising executive better known as a pioneering Alger biographer and bibliographer, introduces this text -- and the front flyleaf bears a fine archival, decorative-edged bookplate boldly inscribed and signed by him in blue fineline: "Wish best wishes / from / Ralph D. Gardner." An exceptional copy of a much less often seen title -- and with a fine autograph addition. .
