The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family
London, Bradbury and Evans, 1854-1855. First edition. Leather. A first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's later novel, The Newcomes. With twenty three plates to each volume A first edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, The Newcomes, with twenty three plates to each volume. Best known for hist 1848 novel Vanity Fair, Thackeray's early satire and parodies were marked by attacks on high society, military prowess, and hypocrisy. Thackeray often wrote under various pseudonyms, as is the case with the present work where Pendennis, a character from another of his late novels, is positioned as the author and narrator of The Newcomes. This later work reflects a mellowing of Thackeray's tone, but is notable for its critical portrayal of the marriage market. With a small white sticker to the front pastedown of both volumes, depicting a swan. Rebound in quarter calf over green cloth boards. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards, with signs of water damage, and a dark mark to the rear board of volume I. The cloth to the front board of volume II is a little discoloured towards the top edge. A little worn to the head and tail of the spines, the joints, and the extremities. The front hinge is starting and a little tender in both volumes, and the rear hinge of volume I is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the first few pages and around the plates. Good . Ill.: Richard Doyle. Good .
