Bound in early calf, spine with raised bands, lettered and stamped in gilt. Vol. 2 has half title only. The First Edition had only 387 pages. Printed by Louis and Daniel Elsevier. Vols. 1-2, printed by the Elseviers in 1658, were reprinted in 1662, when the work was continued, with t. p. still dated 1658. This 2d ed. differs in a few typographical details from the earlier one. see Willem, Les Elzevier, no. 1233. One of the earliest modern studies of the passions in man and in animals. Although often found in medical catalogs [Countway, NIM] the line between Belles Lettres and science was very fine in this period, this crossed it, and was much appreciated for its prose style. The last chapter of our work, new in this edition, was translated into English and published in 1658 as : A discourse of the knowledge of beasts, wherein is all that hath been said for, and against their ratiocination.
