II, 330: "..with curious plates .. This mock-heroic poem, intended to expose false taste and false science, is replete with happy parodies of distinguished passages in the classics, particularly Virgil." Book Four [See Gamble 44] includes an aerial combat / flying race between a Briton and a German, probably the first such, according to H.C.Levis, who re-published in limited edition this section in 1918, entitling it "An Aerial Race between a Briton and a German together with brief references to a submarine ..". The two preflight aviators are flying by means of different sorts of machines which have wings powered by hand/ or foot, a famous preflight image. Lowndes V.
