First edition; 21 of 30 (i.e. 24) plates + title page and a list of illustrations; elephant folio binder, green cloth over boards, gilt title to front board; 20 1/2 x 14 1/2; loose card stock sheets with mounted color plates, sheets 20 x 14, plates approx. 11 1/2 x 8 1/2; plates in fine condition, a few of the sheets with minor nicks and cuts to corners; title page and list of illustrations with cuts and chips along edges; folder with cloth split along spine and a few spots from tape residue; overall in very good condition. Prince Grigory Gagarin (1810 - 1893) was a Russian artist, diplomat, and Major General. After studying under the great Karl Briullov, Gagarin became friends with Pushkin and Lermontov and illustrated several of the former's books. During the Caucasian War, he took part in the military operations and continued painting, at the same time. He would become the Vice President of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1859. His current work, published posthumously, illustrated people, landmarks, and everyday happenings in the Caucasus. Ill.: 0. 2.
