The book, written by a former prisoner of the Nazi concentration camps, describes Mykhailo Ilkiv's escape from Ukraine after the German-Polish War in 1939, his time at a refugee Camp No. 23 at Watenstedt, his arrest by the Gestapo in 1941 and imprisonment at concentration camps at Halendorf and Oranienburg, the conditions and life at the camps, his almost dying of starvation in 1944, and his ultimate release by the American Occupational Forces at the end of the Second World War.
