The Pennsylvania Prison Society, originally named The Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons, was established in 1787 by a group of prominent figures of US history, including Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Rush, and others. It aimed to reform the existing harsh penal code and to improve the appalling state of the penal institutions. The letter, by the General Secretary of the organization John J. Lytle, addressed one C. S. Wurtz - thanking him for his donation of $5 for the relief of discharged prisoners and enclosing a short explanation of how the money would be spent to help the former inmates become productive members of society. The receipts, indicating the ammount of money donated, were issued to Wurtz in 1903 and 1904. Ill.: 0. 2.
