Tobilevych, Ivan (pseud. Karpenko-Karyi) - Naimychka. Drama V Piaty Diiakh (the Handmaiden. A Drama in Five Acts)

Niu Iork: Koshtom i nakladom drukarni Pavla Petrova, 1917. Softcover. First edition thus; 6 1/4 x 4; pp. 3-100; green wraps, ruled and printed in black; small rust spots around staples; age-toning to margins; a small insect nibble to upper corner of front wrap; very good condition. Cheaply made, emigre edition of one of Tobilevych's best known play, originally published in 1885. Writing under the pseudonym Karpenko - Karyi (1845 - 1907), he began his career as a playwright quite late in his life, with his first work Novobranets (The New Conscript) being published in 1883. He lived most of his later years under police surveillance, for his involvement with Ukrainian revolutionaries. Tobilevych wrote a total of eighteen, very popular, and often performed plays, in which he reflected on life in Russian-ruled Ukraine, the evil of ordinary people in a position of authority, and the social relations in the small, peasant villages. His works would be considered an important step forward for the modern Ukrainian theater. Ill.: 0. 2.
