Selucius Garfielde (1822 - 1883) was a lawyer, politician, and Delegate to the US House of Representatives from the Territory of Washington from 1869 to 1873, who had played a direct role in the creating of the Idaho Territory. He also had various interests outside of politics, for he was a co-owner of the Coal Creek Road Company and several gambling parlors, among other things. The current pamphlet contained the condensed version of a lecture Garfielde had delivered, subtopics of which included climate of the Northwest, California irrigation, causes of the diversity of climate, etc. The previous owner of the pamphlet, Arnold Henry Guyot (1807 - 1884), was a Swiss - American geologist and geographer. He would begin the first systematic instruction in geology at Princeton University in 1855 and would found what is today known as the Princeton Museum of Natural History in 1856. Several landmarks have been named after him, including the Guyot Crater on the Moon, Guyot Glacier in Alaska, and three different Mt. Guyot peaks in the White Mountains, the Colorado Rockies, and the Great Smokey Mountains. Ill.: 0. 2.
