Carroll, Lewis - The Hunting of the Snark; an Agony, in Eight Fits

Early American edition; 7 1/2 x 5; pp. 108, recto only; plain red cloth over boards; faded gilt title to spine; some rubbing to spine tips and corners; minor dust-dulling to boards; illustrated with nine engraved plates by Henry Holiday; ownership signature, date, and a quote from the book on first free leaf; overall very good- condition. A wonderful edition of Lewis Carroll's "nonsense poem," it bears a short manuscript quote of four lines from the book: "The song of the Jubjub recurred to their minds.." in the hand of noted artist and illustrator Ethel Newcombe Farnsworth (1873 - 1959) and her signature and date (Christmas 1899). Born in New Jersey, she spent the early years of her career in California before moving to and settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she continued working until her death. Ill.: 0. 2.
