Shestov, Lev - Sola Fide - Tol'Ko Veroiu. Grecheskaia I Srednovekovaia Filosofiia Liuter I Tserkov'

Paris: YMCA Press, 1966. Softcover. First edition; 6 1/2 x 9 3/4; pp. [6], 9-295; printed stiff wraps; minor chipping and bumping to spine tips and corners; very good to near fine. Though considered by those who are familiar with his work to be one of the truly great religious philosophers of our time, Lev Shestov's stature has not been generally recognized nor have his writings been widely studied. He was born in 1866 in Kiev and educated in Moscow and his hometown but he fled Russia after the October Revolution and settled in Paris where he lived and worked until his death in 1938. His philosophy reflected his anti-scientism and anti-philosophic rationalism views and his contradictory and paradoxical ideas outlined his beliefs that "life itself was deeply paradoxical and not comprehensible through logical or rational inquiry." Shestov's "By Faith Alone" - a work on Luther and Greek and Medieval Philosophy - was written sometime between 1911 and 1914 when he was in Switzerland. Never published in its entirety in his lifetime, parts of the manuscript appeared in Berlin in 1923 and in Paris in 1957. It was not until 1966 - on the 100th anniversary of the author's birth - that YMCA published this first complete edition. Ill.: 0. 2.
