FÖHL, Thomas - NEUMANN, Antje (eds.) - KLASSIK STIFTUNG WEIMAR - Henry van de Velde. Raumkunst und Kunsthandwerk. Interior Design and Decorative Arts. Ein Werkverzeichnis in 6 Bänden, Band II: Textil A catalogue raisonné in six volumes, Volume II: Textiles

Leipzig, E.A. Seemann, 2013. 30,6 x 25 cm, 496 pages, full colour illustrations, publisher's cloth. New copy ¶ Understanding his role as apostle of an all encompassing creativity, Henry van de Velde turned early to designs for women’s clothing. Initial designs for dresses for his wife were produced with her collaboration as early as 1894/95. Numerous other designs followed until 1902 and were presented in various exhibitions and publications. The move to Weimar is understood here as a break, as van de Velde hereafter dedicated himself increasingly to the design of furniture and decorative items - a field in which he had been more active since the late 1890s, working for manufacturers in Krefeld and in Chemnitz. Alongside this appeared designs for knotted and woven carpets as well as for simpler coverings for the entire floor. Van de Velde’s textile art was collected early, and numerous patterns have been preserved in the museums of Zurich, Krefeld, Brussels, Chemnitz, and Ghent. Here as well this catalog explores new territory, as research into Henry van de Velde’s textile works has hitherto been fairly superficial.
