O'NEAL, HANK; BERENICE ABBOTT - BERENICE ABBOTT
O'Neal, Hank. BERENICE ABBOTT. 2 volumes; volume I: Portraits, The American Scene, Science: foreword by Ron Kurtz, 264 pages, roughly 110 b&w plates; volume II: New York: 316 pages, roughly 150 b&w plates. 4tos, cloth in slipcase. Gottingen, Steid, 2008. There's very little on Abbott that's comprehensive or in print, and in any case this book runs rings around everything that's come before it. It's an encyclopedic monograph, from her 1920s Parisian portraits (she was Man Ray's dark room assistant), to the scientific and industrial images of the late 1950s. Included are some lesser-known projects, and a wealth of rarely seen photographs.
