Light wear at jacket edges, mostly at the head and heel of spine panel, else fine copy in fine jacket. Faint jacket ripple at bottom edge of spine panel. A clean, square copy without priceclipping. Deeply moving novel, which is a strange label to put on a southern Gothic horror novel. Danny Boles, a new player on a Georgia baseball team in the summer of 1943, befriends the seven foot first baseman and discovers that "Jumbo" Hank Clerval is the actual Frankenstein Monster in disguise playing on a AAA baseball team during WWII. Reminded us of those lazy summer days, playing baseball and taking in all-day monster movie matinees. One of our favorites from the 1990s, in any genre, and a loving homage to Mary Shelley's classic novel and to baseball. "[O]ne of the finest writers working in SF today." Wolfe, Locus Magazine. Award History: 1995 John W. Campbell Award Nominee (lost to Permutation City by Greg Egan); 1995 SF Chronicle Award Winner for Best Novel; 1995 Hugo Award Nominee (lost to Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold); 1995 Locus Poll Award Wiinner for Best Fantasy Novel; 1995 World Fantasy Award Nominee (lost to Towing Jehovah by James Morrow); 1996 Mythopoeic Award Nominee (lost to Waking the Moon by Elizabeth Hand).
