Some hundreds of wood-engraved illustrations, vignettes, head- and tailpieces, including Gavarni's wonderful series 'Les Gens de Paris', xxxii,380pp., edges gilt, 4to.(270x180mm.), publisher's elaborate cloth pictorial binding in red, blue, pink, green and gold (bound by Lenegre - signed at base of spine). A trace of rubbing at tips and spine ends but still fresh and unchipped. A very good copy, clean internally, but missing the rare plan of Paris as in the majority of copies. ¶ Originally published in parts 1843-45, this is the first volume of the collected edition. The second volume appeared in1846. Either volume is uncommon in the splendid Romantique publisher's binding as here. Ray,'The Art of the French Illustrated Book' No.236.
