London, The Ray Society, 1871. Folio (36.2 x 27.2 cm). xxiii, 154 pp., 61 text engravings, 12 partly hand-coloured plates with explanatory text leaves. Later full buckram with gilt title on the spine. A fine, detailed, and well-illustrated work, with the plates - reminiscent of those of Haeckel - printed in Berlin. The original bindings are notoriously brittle and in this copy replaced with early 20th-century cloth. The title is for both parts, but the second, special, part is not included. Some plates with some marginal foxing, otherwise a very good, well-bound copy. Nissen ZBI, 93.
