The first edition of this large paper history of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, complete with unclipped dust wrapper. A history of the Martyrs of Tolpuddle, six agricultural labourers who were convicted for swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. They were arrested and sentenced to a seven years' penal transportation to Australia before being pardoned in 1836 after mass protests by sympathisers. With a colourful frontispiece and three further coloured plates by W. G. Easton, as well as cartoons by Low and Will Dyson in text, sketch maps and portraits by Frank Horrabin. Complete with unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's half morocco binding over cloth covered boards, titles in gilt to spine. Externally sound with minor shelf wear general light soiling to boards and spine. Dust wrapper unclipped with shelf wear, chipping to wraps, minor loss to head and tail of spine and rear board, general soiling, few closed tears. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
