The first edition of one of the first poetry anthologies featuring illustrations in photographs, a scarce volume complete with all albumen photographs. A scarce copy of the first edition of this work, one of the first poetry anthologies to feature illustrations in photographs by William Morris Grundy, who gained fame as a photographer through his series of stereoscopic genre scenes titled Rural England. The present volume was illustrated with his negatives by the London Stereoscopic Company, who bought and used them posthumously to his death in 1859. Comprising a variety of poetical works concerning the countryside by numerous authors, including Longfellow, Dodds, Pope, Wordsworth, Cowper, and many others notable poets. Collated, complete with twenty mounted albumen prints. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally smart with some shelf wear and some bumping and chipping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light soiling to the boards. Internally, the front hinges are slightly strained, holding firm, the volume firmly bound. With only minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves, otherwise the pages are bright and clean.
