An early novel by Graham Greene, which explores the lives of people close to Drover, a bus driver, in the days before he was due to hang, sentenced to die by his Communist colleagues to gain support for the party. Later described by Greene as 'overtly political,' its theme was defined as 'the injustice of man's justice.' At first the novel only sold a few copies, but received much praise by Ezra Pound and Ford Madox Ford. Later it would sell over one hundred and twenty thousand copies. In 1948, Greene extensively revised the novel for the third edition and his changes were incorporated in future printings.
