London, Printed for Edward and Charles Dilly..., 1779. Small 12mo (in 6s), 133 x 86 mms., pp. xxii, [23] - 156 [157 - 160 "Library"], original hessian covered boards. A very good copy, with the notation the recto of the front free end-paper, "Mary Eliz Moffat. began to write, August 8th 1780". The lexicographer and grammarian John Ash (1724–1779) was first published in 1761, though it had apparently been written expressly for Ash's five-year-old daughter. It proved to be unexpectedly popular, with some 50 editions published before 1801, and it was the first grammar of English origin to be printed in America (Chatham, New Jersey, 1783). This was the last edition to have "revised by the author" on the title-page, and the four pages of "proper" books at the end appears to be new. Alston: I, 164. ESTC T89333 locates copies in the BL and the National Library of Wales; and only Harvard University, Graduate School of Education in North America.
