A student of Baucher and the comte d'Aure, he established the riding school in 1864 Saint-Cyr, reopening the cavalry section. He later returned to Saumur as the commandant of the Ecole de Cavalerie in 1875. The French Cavaly unit [equine vs. Motorized] still exists in the 21st century, still centered in Saumur, France. He was considered by his peers to be the most outstanding 'ecuyer' of his period. L'Hotte [1825-1904] is considered one of the most influential riding masters of the modern era, his writings and teachings are still studied by the serious student of dressage and 'haut ecole'.
