ARNE THOMAS A.: - Rule Britannia.

London,Musical Bouquet of High Holborn . (c 1850) No 58 . With a stirring ¾ portrait of Britannia flanked by a sailor and a marine and with a man o’war in the background. Performed by Jullien’s Band, the French Guide’s Band and the Band’s of the Grenadier & Coldstream Guards. .This series commenced around 1846 and was the combined idea of James Bingley and William Strange and operated from 192 High Holborn and they blatantly pirated material from other publishers in the days before the establishment of copyright and Stationers Hall. This early sheet is just such an example. Nevertheless the front cover is stylish enough and may well be an Alfred Ashley front cover. Around 1850 Chas Sheard had replaced William Strange and indeed had taken over James Bingley's investment and under his control, the Musical Bouquet continued until 1889 and ran to almost 9,000 individual pieces of music. Folio size with music. Well used along the outer edge not affecting else condition good/very good. An excellent front cover and of course a very famous song by Arne which was originally written in 1740 for the masque Alfred in honour of the Princess of Brunswicks birthday and to commemorate the accession of George 1
