BALCH, Edwin Swift. - Glacieres or Freezing Caverns.

 1527843133,
Philadelphia, Allen, Lane & Scott 1900. Octavo publisher's cloth; [8],337pp, 31 illustrations - photo plates and diagrams in the text. A sparkling copy. ¶ First edition. Undoubtedly the essential book on glacieres - not be confused with caves that freeze and thaw according to season. The true glaciere is always frozen - some have been used as ice mines - and, as displayed in the illustrations, can contain spectacular displays of ice forms. Balch became aware of and quickly enamoured with subterranean ice in 1877 and spent quite a bit of time hiking and climbing around Europe and America exploring every ice cave he could find. He provides a list of every glaciere that he knew of around the world, investigates the science, and finishes with an impressive bibliography.
