London, Henry Colburn 1813. Quarto, very good in contemporary marbled calf (spine a bit worn); 418,clxxvii,[16]pp, 4 plates. With the bookplate of Francis Enys of Enys, Cornwall. The Enys had apparently been there pretty much since prehistoric times. ¶ The first full life of Reynolds by his quasi-protege (he worked in Reynolds' studio, even lived in his house, but apparently never received any lessons) and though a public expecting more intimate details was disappointed, this formed the basis for all subsequent lives. Northcote himself apparently ended up as rather repulsive, grubby and miserly in all things except when it came to collecting relics of the Northcote family.
