Various Authors - The Independent. June 1, 1876

 1535549901,
New York, Henry C. Bowen, Publisher, 1876. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid journal. Disbound from a larger work. 32 pp. The Independent was a long running newspaper that promoted Congregationalism and advocated for abolition and women's suffrage, among other social issues. This issue contains a rendition of the African-American folk tale, "The Reason why Brother Rabbit Wears a Short Tail," written in dialect by Mrs. A.M. Christensen. Also included is a paragraph mocking theosophists and their practices, and a short article on two balloonists, Glaisher and Coxwell of England, who in September of 1862 apparently endeavored to travel as high as they could in their balloon. According to the balloonists, they reached a height of at least 29,000 feet (and perhaps 35000 feet). However one balloonist became unconscious and temporary lost his eyesight, with the other experience, noted balloonist Henry Coxwell, suffering from what sounded like frostbite. GOOD condition. Binding holes along left edge. General toning, minor soiling and foxing to the paper. Minor chipping along the extremities. Tiny address label on the rear page. Paper slightly brittle. Good .
