Hubbard, Elbert - The Philistine. A Periodical of Protest. November, 1900. Vol. XI No. 6

East Aurora, NY, The Roycrofters, Elbert Hubbard, Publisher, 1900. Wraps. Yellow printed wraps, with an Arts and Crafts style decoration on the rear cover. Pagination runs 161-192 plus ads. A single issue of this little magazine from the turn of the century, featuring essays and philosophical/literary musings on culture, society, art and literature, as well as short aphorisms and sayings throughout under the guise of Hubbard's Heart to Heart Talks. Founded by Hubbard after his 'bitter experience with the New England intellectual and literary elite,' the Philistine was at first intended as a 'one-off jibe at the establishment.' (MacLeod: American Little Magazines of the 1890s). Published through the Roycrofters community in New York, the magazine eventually became a vehicle for Hubbard to express his political and cultural views, while incorporating the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time, into printing and layout. GOOD condition. Large tear at the upper front extremity. Some chipping, minor tearing and loss along the extremities. General browning to the wraps. Minor soiling and staining, including a white stain at the lower left corner. A few small spots of insect damage to the front cover. Alphanumerical notation in pencil to the first page. Good .
