Bainbridge, Lucy Seaman - Jewels from the Orient

New York, Fleming H. Revell Company, 1920. First Edition. Cloth. First edition. Brown cloth with an illustration of a pagoda, in green, on the front cover. No jacket. 125 pp. With a few photo plates throughout. All present as called for. A recounting of the author's travels to various missions and missionaries in Japan, China, India and Burma, detailing the lives, customs and culture of the people of those countries. Written from the perspective of a missionary and influenced by Biblical teachings. Of note is a lengthy inscription on the front free endpaper by the author's son, apparently written on her passing, in which he states how lucky he is and quotes a note written by Helen Keller to him, in which she says, "She is not dead, she is just away." The son of Bainbridge asserts in his inscription that Helen Keller and Lucy Bainbridge were friends. (An online copy of a 1933 newspaper article also mentions this.) In VERY GOOD condition. Light fading, rubbing and edgewear to the covers. Small bump across the top of the book. Interior clean and solid with light toning to the paper. Very Good/No Jacket.
