BOYD, James - Marching on

 1554314056,
New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering. 426pp. Very good. Most minor of binding edgewear, else tight and internally fine; circular blind-embossed ownership imprint on front flyleaf. A tight, handsome first edition of the second novel by this died-too-young writer (1888-1945) best known for his historical fiction, which many think raised the quality and standing of the genre. Best of all, as signed copies of this title are practically non-existent, this attractive copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Boyd, 1p, 7½" X 10", Southern Pines, NC, 7 April 1939. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Very good. Original folds. Boldly penned in black ink on his personal letterhead. Memorable sentiment in reply to kind words about his fourth novel "Bitter Creek" -- in part: "I do hope you're one of Thousands: Though only one in a thousand will take the trouble to let the writer know." Boldly signed. .
