BENET, Stephen Vincent - John Brown's Body

Murray Hill, NE, Rinehart & Company, 1928. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 336pp. Map endpapers. Very good. Spine a tad sunned with lettering a bit rubbed, else tight and internally near fine. Attractive early reprint edition of this book-length epic poem, winner of the 1929 Pulitzer Prize. A classic, the most famous John Brown rendering in verse --and this copy with choice bold ownership signature in blue ink on half-title page of Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor, two-time presidential candidate and noted Lincoln admirer himself. Benet (1898-1943) died at the relatively young age of 44; Stevenson was an admirer, and used a portion of Benet's 1942 "United Nations Prayer" (used by FDR in a Flag Day radio address) in his 1964 Christmas card -- when he was U.S. ambassador to the U.N.! A wonderful association copy. .
