Mild jacket edgewear and bit of rubbing. A tight and nice first edition of the third novel by this American writer (1922-93) whose style critics often placed somewhere between Hemingway and Camus. Laid in is an unlined index card bearing pencilled notes about this title by academic and literary critic Joseph J. Waldmeir (1923-2013) -- presumably jottings for one of his many published book reviews. .
