(SANDBURG, Carl -- Centennial) - Signed First Day Cover

Renowned Illinois poet and Lincoln biographer (1878-1967) the centennial of whose birth occasioned the issuance of a U.S. postage stamp and commemorative celebrations. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Galesburg, Illinois on 6 January 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. 13-cent "Carl Sandburg" stamp at upper right. Fine. Galesburg was Carl Sandburg's birth place and is where his ashes reside, and Knox College, that city's noted liberal arts college, hosted major Sandburg centenary celebrations. This FDC has been boldly signed by seven noted Sandburg figures who gathered there for ceremonies and a symposium -- a "Who's Who" of Sandburg Studies. In order: NORTH CALLAHAN (1908-2004), award-winning historian whose many volumes on American history include "Carl Sandburg: Lincoln of Our Literature"; HERMAN R. MUELDER (1905-88), noted historian and authority on Midwestern history; CONSTANT R. JOHNSON (b. 1922), pastor of Galesburg's Trinity Lutheran Church; WILLIAM M. ANDERSON, president of Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg; MARGARET SANDBURG (1911-97), Carl Sandburg's eldest daughter; FREDERICK I. OLSON (1916-2003), noted historian and authority on Milwaukee history; ALAN SWANSON, professor of Scandinavian; and lastly, though she wasn't involved in this symposium, PENELOPE NIVEN, biographer whose works include the 1993 "Carl Sandburg: A Biography." This striking FDC is accompanied by the 16-page 4to booklet "Carl Sandburg Centenary," Knox College's program to these activities, which includes biographies and photographs of these symposium speakers. .
