HOLZMAN, Robert S. - Roger Pryor

New York, The Civil War Round Table of New York, 1964. Paperback. 16mo. Stiff wrappers. (4pp). Fine. NOT a speech or essay, but rather a program for the 134th meeting of this distinguished group held at New York's famed club The Lambs, the topic of the meeting as announced on the front wrapper being this speech. Near the center of this, Holzman signs boldly in full in blue fountain pen. Holzman (?-1998) was a New York University educator and historian, author of "Stormy Ben Butler" (1954), "General 'Baseball' Doubleday" (1955), "The Romance of Firefighting" (1956) and other histories. Inside left consists of the program itinerary, inside right a thumbnail biography of Holzman, outside rear wrapper a history of a CWRT centennial medal. From the collection of noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93; CWRT president 1965-66). A handsome and unusual memento. Holzman's talk on Pryor, according to the biography here, came "from a book-length manuscript which he has just completed and which we hope to see in book form very soon" -- which for some reason didn't quite work out, for Holzman's book "Adapt or Perish: The Life of General Roger A. Pryor, CSA" wasn't published until 1976. .
