Tight and handsome first edition of this popular juvenile tale, with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a lovely Autograph Note Signed from the author in bold red on a heavy stock 3½" X 2½" engraved "With the Compliments of" card, reading in full: "To a regular subscriber / Arnold Gates / and son / Adele Gutman Nathan / This will be out September / 12th -- in time for our / first meeting!" Gates was a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and book review editor for "The Lincoln Herald" and "Civil War Times," making this a nice presentation copy indeed. .
