Printed in a limited edition of 1,500 copies, this is copy number 1484. Apollonij Ghetti's report on the excavations under St. Peter's Basilica. Includes a numismatic appendix by Marchese Camillo Serafini. See further: Roger T. O'Callaghan "Recent Excavations Underneath the Vatican Crypts" (The Biblical Archaeologist 12, 1949), and "Vatican Excavations and the Tomb of St. Peter" (The Biblical Archaeologist 16.4, 1953). Exquisitely illustrated. All the photographic plates and illustrations are printed in coloured or tinted collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. A remarkable production. [Note: a heavy set, over 7 KG). X-7 .
