HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary full calf, chafed, joints split but firm, corner-tips worn, lower corner of last blank chipped, small stain at blank bottom margin of one page. Evenly age toned, previous auction sale entry tipped-in onto first paste-down, contemporary entry, dated 1807, at corner of first free endpaper. Authentic, first binding. In good condition, very good interior. ~ First American edition. It was first published in London in 1802 as "An Enquiry into the Nature and Effects of the Paper Credit of Great Britain and Serious Reflections on Paper Money in General". Henry Thornton (1760-1815), English merchant and banker. Was director of the Bank of England, and for 30 years member of Parliament. In his "Enquiry" he systemized ideas on money, circulation, interest, price, and employment. Though very successful in his own day, the "Enquiry" was gradually forgotten until Hollander, Viner, and others rediscovered it and drew attention to its anticipations of modern monetary theory.
