(Sherman, William T.) - "The Burning of Columbia, S.C." in Harper's Weekly (April 8, 1865)

New York, 1865. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. Waud, W.; A. Gardner; Theodore Davis. Complete and original issue. NOT A REPRINT BUT THE ORIGINAL, RARE DOCUMENT. Very good+ with light wear to spine where disbound and stray foxing. With only one tiny, closed tear to bottom edge of front page, this copy shows only light wear and looks considerably younger than its age. This issue focuses on the "armies of the Union.bearing down heavily upon Richmond--the great military center up which the revolutionists have drawn back for their last convulsive efforts against the United States Government." The cover shows illustrations of "The Fifteenth Corps Crossing the South Edisto" and "The Raising of the Stars and Stripes over the Capitol at Columbia, South Carolina, both by Theodore Davis. Additional illustrations are a "Map of the Campaign against Richmond," Sherman's march through the Carolinas (moving up Cape Fear River and the charge at White Pond) by Davis; "The 'Richmond" Rescuing the Crew of the 'Enterprise,' (February 15, 1865), "Ruins of the Norfolk Navy-Yard" (based on a photograph by A. Gardner). Two full-page illustrations of the "Charge of Weaver's Brigade across the Salkehatchie, S. C." by Davis and "The Burning of Columbia, S.C. February 17, 1865) by W. Waud. Another page shows "Scenes from the Disastrous Freshets" or floods in Rochester and Mound City, Illinois. Yet another page devoted to the war between Brazil against Paraguay and Uruguay with portrait of Leandro Giomex, his head-quarters and Turret Fort in Paysandu, and a third of Montevideo, Uruguay. Very Good.
