WM. R. BROWNE - The Ascent of the Nassau Balloon, with the Parachute attached, 24th July 1837. This Sketch exhibits the Parachute, with Mr. Cocking, in the three stages of its descent. Sketched on the spot.

Wm. Morgan, 28th. July 1837. Hand coloured engraved lithograph double image, 270 x 365 mm. A little chipped with a short closed tear. A rare contemporary image of the first parachute fatality, that of Robert Cocking, the unfortunate inventor of the contraption, who was lifted by Robert Green's huge Nassau balloon from Vauxhall Gardens, before releasing the parachute and plunging to his death. The parachute's weight and flimsy construction were the cause of the tragedy.
